A Concert Series at Brainlab Headquarters
These evenings are dialogues between two manifestations of the human urge to explore: On the one hand, in the form of lectures from basic research and applied science; on the other, music at the pulse of its time for chamber ensembles and similar instrumentations.
The first concert begins with the lecture “Humor as a means of survival (and the engine of the good life)” by Prof. Dr. Willibald Ruch. On the second evening, Prof. Dr. Armin Nassehi will shed light on the topic of “Guilt,” and the final evening will offer insights from Prof. Dr. Peter Vajkoczy on “Brain surgery as a fine line between life and death.”
Various disciplines from the wide-ranging scientific network of Brainlab approach the questions of remembering responsibility, human memory and strategies for surviving existential crises. The music brings to life the personality of the Soviet composer Mieczysław Weinberg, who is of Polish-Jewish descent, in correspondence with one of his friends and patrons, Dmitri Schostakowitsch, along with a central composition by the American minimal music pioneer, Steve Reich. The first concert will be a performance of the chamber opera Lady Magnesia, a black comedy based on a work by George Bernard Shaw.
