German government funds new research project “INSIGHT” with ExacTrac Dynamic
Together with our partners, the Department of Radiation Oncology at the LMU University Hospital, LMU Munich, the Chair of Experimental Physics – Medical Physics at the LMU Munich, and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg with the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, we are pleased to announce that the research project “Intelligent Tumor Tracking for Radiotherapy (INSIGHT)” will be funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research in the area healthcare from the framework program medical research for three years starting June 1, 2024. This project is part of the funding initiative “New Therapy Options through Innovative Medical Technology” (13GW0730A).
The goal of the INSIGHT project is to develop a solution to track and monitor tumors in the upper abdomen, e.g., liver and lymph node metastases, as well as primary liver and pancreatic tumors, during stereotactic high-precision radiotherapy using the ExacTrac Dynamic® positioning and monitoring system. The ExacTrac Dynamic technology tracks patients with various tumor types with submillimetric accuracy during radiation therapy and verifies the position of the tumor using imaging data. This way, the treatment beam can be controlled based on tumor position, reducing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This enables significantly faster treatment with fewer side effects compared to conventional radiation therapy.
