Lady Magnesia returns to Brainlab
Back in February, Mieczysław Weinberg's opera "Lady Magnesia" delighted the audience at the Brainlab company headquarters so much so that the production, originally planned as a one-off performance, was extended by three dates. Interested parties can now look forward to this original performance again at the end of the year.
Mieczysław Weinberg, a Soviet composer of Polish-Jewish origin and son of a theater musician, left behind a body of work that encompasses all musical genres. In 1975, he created "Lady Magnesia", a one-act play based on the melodrama "Passion, Poison and Petrification" by George Bernard Shaw. In this dark comedy, Weinberg abandons his typical style and the question of humanity in dark times to instead stage a subtle satire on opera itself. He shapes Shaw's criticism of Victorian drama into a humorous all-round attack on the genre of opera.
The performance is staged by Theresa Maria Schlichtherle under the musical direction of Armando Merino Alcalde.
The opera is performed in English and is accompanied by surtitles in German and English.
