Since 2023, Brainlab has been an innovation partner and sponsor of the Bayerische Staatsoper’s Ja, Mai Festival. As part of this event, themed concerts will take place at the Brainlab headquarters on March 19, 21, and 22, bringing science and art together. The concerts will explore themes of perception, memory, and recollection—topics closely intertwined with the essence of music.

At the heart of the Ja, Mai Festival 2025 are the chamber operas Das Jagdgewehr by Thomas Larcher (2018), premiering on May 2, and Matsukaze by Toshio Hosokawa (2011), which will have its premiere on May 3, 2025. These works continue the exploration, begun in the previous season, of how individual and collective memory are shaped by human recollection.

Three experts will deepen the discussion further through interdisciplinary lectures:

1st themed concert - Music as the art of memory and remembrance

A lecture by Prof. Dr. Eckart Altenmüller will be accompanied by works from Thomas Larcher and Béla Bartók, performed by Matjaž Bogataj (violin), Yves Savary (cello), Andreas Schablas (clarinet) and Jean-Pierre Collot (piano).

Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at 7:00 PM

2nd themed concert - The night symphony: Dreaming of a good night's sleep

The Schumann Quartet Munich will perform Lucid Dreams for string quartet by Thomas Larcher and Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major. Sleep researcher Dr. Hans-Günter Weeß will give the evening’s lecture.

Friday, March 21, 2025, at 7:00 PM

3rd themed concert - Music and memory: How sounds revive lost memories

This theme will be explored through chamber music works by Thomas Larcher and Gabriel Fauré, performed by Lavinia Dames and Simone McIntosh (sopranos), So-Young Kim (violin), Benedikt Don Strohmeier (cello), and So-Jin Kim (piano).
