Airo® Mobile Intraoperative CT Honored as Finalist in Coveted 2014 Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA)
Mobius Imaging honored by MDEA for this one-of-a-kind imaging system
Mobius Imaging announced today that Airo Mobile Intraoperative CT has been selected as a finalist in the Radiological and Electromechanical Devices category of the 17th Annual Medical Design Excellence Awards competition. Airo inclusion into the Finalists category was officially announced in the April issue of MD+DI (Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry) magazine. This is the second design honor for Airo, having received a 2014 Red Dot Product Design award.
MDEA, a premier medtech industry design competition, honors Airo Mobile Intraoperative CT for high-caliber device design. Airo integrates advanced imaging technologies into existing medical workflow and provides clinicians with procedural flexibility as well as real-time CT imaging. Designed to function inside existing O.R. suites, Airo possesses an ultra-small footprint and is appropriate for cranial, spine and trauma procedures, making it a highly versatile intraoperative imaging system.
“We are honored and thrilled about this recognition from the MDEA,” said Gene Gregerson, CEO of Mobius Imaging. “This nomination acknowledges our engineering research, usability studies and human factors design and demonstrates to our customers that Airo offers innovative design and an intelligent solution for their workflow and surgical setup requirements.”
MDEA entries are judged by an impartial panel of medtech experts comprised of practicing doctors, nurses and technicians alongside industrial designers, engineers, manufacturers and human factors experts. The jurors comprehensively review entries based on the following criteria: the ability of the product development team to overcome all challenges so the product meets its clinical objectives; innovative use of materials, components and processes; user-related functions improving healthcare delivery and changing traditional medical attitudes or practices; features providing enhanced benefits to the patient and end-user in relation to clinical efficacy; manufacturing cost-effectiveness and profitability; and healthcare system benefits such as improved accessibility, efficacy or safety, in addition to providing attention to a critical unmet clinical needs.
“Partnering with Mobius on the sales, marketing and distribution of Airo has been a critical success and yielded great market response,” said Stefan Vilsmeier, President and CEO of Brainlab. “Recognition by MDEA recognizes the product’s singularity and highlights how this technology has the potential to change daily practice in the surgical space and expand the impact of technology across multiple clinical applications.”
Winners will be announced on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at MD&M East’s main networking event—the 2014 Medical Design Excellence Awards ceremony. MD+DI will recognize the finalists and announce the Bronze, Silver and Gold winners in each of the 11 medtech categories, as well as present the Readers’ Choice, Best-In-Show, Lifetime Achievement Awards, and more.
The MDEA is committed to searching worldwide for the highest caliber finished medical devices, products, systems or packaging available on the market. The awards program celebrates the achievements of the medical device manufacturers—including the engineers, scientists, designers and clinicians—who are responsible for the cutting-edge products that are helping to save lives, improve patient healthcare and transform medtech—one innovation at a time.
