Elekta and Brainlab Collaborate to Increase Accuracy and Comfort of Radiosurgery Treatments for Individuals with Cancer

Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon, India installs first Elekta treatment system equipped with integrated Brainlab ExacTrac Patient Positioning system

Feldkirchen, Germany, July 30, 2012

Cancer management technology leaders, Brainlab and Elekta announced the first installation of an Elekta linear accelerator (linac) equipped with ExacTrac® Patient Positioning system by Brainlab; a strategy to make radiosurgery treatments for cancer patients more accurate and comfortable. ExacTrac is planned to be integrated with a total of two Elekta linacs at Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon, India.

“ExacTrac is a highly accurate, intuitive and fast IGRT system and, in combination with our advanced Elekta treatment system, gives us the opportunity to maximize the benefits of both systems for our patients,” says Dr Ashok V. Chordiya, Zonal Director, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon.

With more than 500 installations worldwide, ExacTrac is a field-proven system for supporting sub-millimetric patient positioning for patients with tumors anywhere in the brain and body. The system offers a valuable solution, known as Frameless Radiosurgery. ExacTrac helps to reduce errors within the treatment process and potentially maximize overall accuracy.

“In our search to advance the accessibility to high precision treatment alternatives that are less invasive, we required collaboration with an equally dedicated partner,” commented Thomas Kraft, President RoW/Japan, Brainlab, “In Elekta, we found such a partner, and one with a highly regarded, advanced treatment platform. Together we will continue to strive for optimal efficiency, integrated workflow and improved patient care.”

Bill Yaeger, Executive Vice President of Elekta Oncology commented:

“We believe that technology should be based on open interfaces and industry standards, since hospitals use different kinds of technical solutions. ExacTrac will give customers the freedom to choose a solution that best meets their unique workflow and patient care needs. The stereotactic workflow between both systems allows an accurate and fast workflow for patient positioning.”

Fortis Healthcare Ltd., with an asset-base spanning ten countries, is a leading, integrated healthcare provider in the Pan Asia-Pacific region. The installation of the combined linac denotes their dedication to continued advancement of the healthcare sector.
